LED stands for "Light Emitting Diode" and is used in lighting as the main energy source. LEDs are popular in education teaching (e.g electronics classes),neon signs for adveritisng and other forms of high energy lighting.
- How are the colours generated in an LED?
When electricity passes through neon or argon gases it glows. Neon produces a bright red gas and argon emits particles of mercury which glow a faint blue colour. The clear coating of the LED allows you to see which colour the gases are emitting. As scientific experimentation has advanced, gases have been discovered to react with different levels of elements in order to produce other LED colours such as turquoise and yellow. To generate even more colours for an LED, coloured glass coatings are used.
- How is the glass bent in an LED?
Using heated burners, the glass coating of an LED is manually shaped. For LEDs, four different types of burners can be used in order to make the LEDs into different shapes. For specifcally shaped LEDs, hand-held burners can be used.
- How does a neon tube in an LED produce light?
The neon tube produces light through the electrodes at the end of each electrical unit used. The electric atoms are pushed aside by the incoming electrons and the collision energy is given off as light.
- How do you get the gas into an LED tube?
The gas is transmitted into the LED tube by passing wires. Using glass stoppers, the amount of gas transmitted into the tube can be limited where necessary. A high-vacuum pump restricts the level of air in the tube whilst a transofrmer heats what little air is left in the tube along with a small amount of neon or argon gas. Now that the gas has entered the tube, it can be sealed, ready for use.
- How much energy does an LED neon sign use?
An LED neon sign uses around 96 watts, which is around the same amount as a single light bulb. This makes LED neon sings extremely cheap to work, with an average of ten pence per 24-hour day usage.

- Can I fit an LED neon sign myself?
Certainly. Amby's Services have created signs that are simple to fit and easy to maintain. All that is required is an area to plug the sign in, as well as a surface from which the sign can hang.
- Are LED neon signs dangerous?
If handled correctly, LED neon signs are not dangerous. There is only a minute amount of mercury present in certain neon colours used, so as long as the neon tube is not broken, it is safe. Handling an LED neon tube dangerously is a risk to the environment and personal health. If a neon tube should break, it is better to replace it as many suppliers will not fix broken tubes due to the minute yet present amount of mercury. All Amby's Services LED neon signs meet current laws and standards for quality.

- Why buy a neon sign for my business?
Neon signs are proven to boost business by more than 15%. This can result in more profit and customer service from potential buyers.
Neon signs are more environmentally friendly in the long term, as they use LEDs (light emitting diodes) rather than typical light bulbs, which use more energy in a shorter space of time. They are also more expensive, as they have to keeo being replaced. The LEDs used in a neon sign can last between five and seventeen years depending on the type of diode used.
